So this week Yamaha released the new 450 XTO outboard. They claim to be able to charge up to 96 Amps at idle speed in neutral. Is this 96 Amps DC or AC? If I’m doing my calculations correctly, 96 12V DC amps would be equivalent to 11,511 watts per hour at 120V AC. That’s equivalent to a 11.5 kwh generator. Is this right?

Amps are current so it could be either AC ro DC. You are right that Volts x Amps = Watts. I think you missed a decimal place or two.

96 Amps x 12V = 1,152 watts

1,152 Watts/120Volts = 9.6 Amps

The quick math is 12 is 1/10th of 120 so being inversely proportional the amperage is gonna be 1/10th with 10x the voltage - 96A vs 9.6A.
