I have a XT125r that's covered a high milage, I think at some point a refresh will be in order including what I imagined would include a new piston & existing cylinder rebore.
Looking online there seems to be loads of new cheap pistons & barrels for sale, what's the consensus on their quality, are they any good or to be avoided? Anyone used one & have decent milage on it?.
I'm sceptical of a piston, cylinder & gasket kit that costs less than the price of the machine work alone for a rebore!

Cheap usually ends up being more expensive than using proper OEM parts .... Have you checked Wiesco ?
It looks like OEM & Wiesco aren't options, that's why I'm curious if anyone has experience with the no-name stuff.
I've searched online & some of the two stroke enthusiasts (who go through more pistons 😄) have had good & bad results, I suppose that sums it up really, roll of the dice...... especially when non branded means you can't even be sure you're getting what someone else found to be OK.
If I could find a known quality oversize piston I'd probably go that route, I'll ask around locally starting with the local engine machine shop.

Maybe if you are having an engine shop machine it have them supply parts and therefore a warranty on them, regardless of how small.

As BW mentioned above, cross reference the size and investigate OEM or Wiseco parts that are the same.

Check to see if TTR 125 Piston is the same .... 57mm bore ?
XT125 /YBR125 are 54mm X 54mm bore/stroke.

I've been looking at used motors, it's another option & maybe a better one as they are still being made & the only difference is fuel injection (& maybe ignition?), and going that route gets newer everything.....
I looked at a very clean low milage 2017 engine today still in a YBR, my XT is 2006 & although the carb manifold is a easy swap with the FI manifold I imagine I'll also maybe need to swap the flywheel because of different ignition?.... and maybe something I haven't thought of yet! The 2017 doesn't have a kickstart, that can either be swapped or forgotten about..... not too bothered.
I'm not sure about any of this & I'm still looking at the various years parts diagrams to try & work out similarities & differences.....

So.... for anyone following this or searching in the future I've bought a used engine out of a 2015 YBR125 to use in my 2006 XT125.
From parts lists the Camshaft appears the same. The inlet manifold & exhaust appear to be a straight swap.
Right now I'm not sure where I am with the spark & charging ~ flywheel & stator so will update this when I know for sure.
Any info appreciated. 👍

Hopefully it won't be too much of a chore to swap & then I can see what the original engine needs under no time pressure & have a spare.... or that's the plan..

Should match up ....
Not the stator / flywheel, it's different but don't ask me to explain other than 2006 has nine windings & the 2015 has 18 & a different looking flywheel.

I'm just going to swap the flywheel & stator (Inc engine cover) to get things running then work out what's needed to use the newer stator as I assume it's a better output.
