Anybody on here currently enlisted or thinking of becoming enlisted in any of the US branches?

Personally, I'm hoping by this time next year I will be in the Air Force. I currently have a business that I am trying to sell so I can move onto the next step in my life. Just looking for some feedback. Anything is greatly appreciated

I was thinking about it last year (navy, marines, air force), They wanted me so bad because I speak several foreign languages including the most wanted ones: Arabic, etc..
I applied for a linguist position for private companies and they pay is very good about $175K - $80k non-taxable bu my family don't want me to go to Iraq or Afghanistan since the position requires to be in the front line supporting soldiers :)
I'm now more interested in federal jobs as a special agent or linguist.. I have some upcoming exams, hopefully I get in.
anyway, I hope you are thinking about the possible consequences seriously and Good luck :)

I got a buddy that was in the Army (during the more peaceful times) and when he heard about me wanting to go into law enforcement, he recommended that I go in the AF and be a police officer. He said it's not too dangerous, very rewarding, and shouldn't be too tough. Plus the idea of serving some time sounds really good and will probably look even better if/when I decided to leave the AF and go for a local street pig and move my way up through the department.
Just trying to get a feel for what's up from people that either have been or had someone that was in the AF. You're definitely right though, it can be dangerous. But with risks can come rewards

Navy Vet here ! ! I was in during Desert Storm.

Proud of it, and now my step kids are looking into joining...

Good luck if you go in...

I am proud of you !

Potential employers look at veterans differently than non military... It certainly has its benefits when you get out !

I'm in the Air Force. Joined when I was 19. I love doing what I do. I work A-10 Crash Recovery on Davis Monthan AFB. I got here (D-M) in '04, went to Osan AFB Korea, and then came back to D-M. My father is still in the AF going on 19 years now (sewing on Lt. Col), and my Brother has also been in the AF for going on 11 years now (SSgt). I will be hitting my 6 year mark in April (SSgt also). I guess you could say it runs in the family. I plan on retiring from the service. You can't beat the guaranteed paycheck, free medical, free housing, and retiring before I'm 40!

Being a cop in the Air Force is not as dangerous as other services, but you still have the 12-18 month deployments, 16hr days, and not much to do while you are stateside. Not very many interesting things happen on a base, lol. But they do have a lot of pride in what they do and I respect them for it. I am planning on getting my Criminal Justice degree while I am in (free school) and doing something of that sort when I retire. It has been a life long dream of mine to be a cop. Hope this info has helped a little. Good luck with your decision!!

I tried to join the Marines when I was 18, but I have hearing loss and I couldnt get in. The Navy wanted me but I was too stupid at the time to join them. I look back now (43) and really wish I had went in the Navy. It was a stupid ass move on my part.

Thanks for the info Stuckey. I don't mind the deployment at all. In fact, from what my buddy told me the pay is better if you get deployed beyond the US so I welcome it. I'm hoping to do 4 years and then start a law enforcement career somewhere in my neck of the woods.

It is a scary choice but joining does open many possibilitys to you. Also a foot in the door for goverment jobs. Brandon (wildcardracing) Has been in the gaurd for around 11 years now, He has done one deployment to Iraq, It has its ups and downs but all in all has been a very benificial choice for him and his family. He also is a full time technition for the gaurd and it pays pretty good..lol But it is a pretty secure job.

I am just about the only male in my family that didn't join the Military. Not that I don't think it's noble. But I have a real hard time with being yelled at. My Irish temper has gotten me in trouble more than once over the years. But thankfully I seem to be mellowing with age. I do however ride with a group called Warriors Watch. They escort military personal home from airports both living and dead. Don't want anybody thinking they weren't appreciated.

Hey! I know this is old BUT... I am currently in the Air Force and think that it is a good thing to get into! Even if you only do 4 years, you can get a lot out of it! I am in Bioenvironmental Engineering and once I get out, I could work for someone like OSHA or the EPA and I didnt even pay for any of my training, in fact, they paid me to learn it all.

If I could give you one piece of advice, DO NOT SIGN UP AS OPEN GENERAL!!! Decide on a couple jobs that you are willing to take and sign up ONLY for one of them. Unless, of course, you dont mind getting a crap job and going to crap bases!.

Take care

Thanks for the info. I'm hoping to get in asap, but realistically probably gonna be next year at the earliest. Got a business right now, and until I find a buyer for it I can't go anywhere. And seeing how this economy is, probably gonna be here for a little while longer. :bonk:
