My WR had a check engine light come on, but wouldn't give a code. As I was about to put it on the trailer, I decided to check the oil, which was quite low. After I topped off the oil, the check engine light stopped coming on. But I overfilled the oil just a bit and now it's burning oil out of the exhaust. I did winterize the engine, but it never really got cold enough to freeze (South Caolina). So TL;DR, 2 questions:

Can low oil cause the check engine light to come on?

Will the engine burn oil if overfilled? This doesn't seem likely, but thought I'd ask the experts.

Low oil will definitely cause check engine to come on. You really shouldn't run a motor with too much oil, it can back up into the engine and cause damage (smoke is just the beginning). I would try and remove the excess oil.
