1982 Yamaha Virago Xv920 Performance issues

Hello,

When I go to rev up the bike when its it neutral or with the clutch pulled in I have no performance issues.
When I have the bike on the road, after about 5000-5550 RPM the bike will starts sputtering almost like its out of fuel or air and will never pick up any more speed or increase in RPM.
I have tried adding bigger main jets, shimming the needles and opening up the air box but to no avail.

Any thoughts?

Thanks!

What do the plugs look like, white from running lean? Your floats could be a set a little low and you are running out of fuel.
The plugs are black most time when I check them.
I rechecked the floats heights and they seem ok.

when you have a running problem changing jets and such is not the way to go. I would put it back to stock and start over. When you do mods you need a good running machine to start with or you can end up chasing your tail.
My first thought would be the spark plugs themselves being the problem, especially if they are black.
I got the bike running so so now. Went for a 30 minute ride.
I ended up pulling off the boots between the carburetors and the frame. Since doing that it seems to run better however its idling RPM is very high now. This does explain that the it was indeed getting to much fuel as per the black spark plugs.
I have will check the plugs again and report back.

Hopefully its as simple as adjusting the fuel screw to fix the high RPM at idle issue.

Ill try looking for some new stock jets. I have a feeling the jets I had may have already been drilled out from a previous owner.

Does anyone have any experience with running pod filters or does everyone run a single filter directly through the frame?

So you pulled the boots to the air filter and it runs better?
I think you are on the right track, someone may have messed with the jets. I'm assuming the filters are clean.
