So I took off the exhaust on a 1980 Yamaha 400 and dont get how the back bracket attaches, anyone have a picture of how this is supposed to go?

I am not as familiar with these bikes. Looking at the pics and an internet search of the part I am figuring it is an alinement issue. I would prop the mufflers up at the right height first then start both headers in the exhast ports but only just snug. I would then connect the cross pipe just snug. With these in place the bracket should line up with the bolt for the foot peg. after that is slipped on you can go back and tighten the other spots.

The other way around is to hang the mufflers on the bolts then try and pull the header into the opening on the cylinder, that may be the more difficult route.
