ski Surging

HI, new guy here.
I have a 2005 VX1100 sport. The one with no mirrors and no neutral or reverse. Ran fine last year when put up, but first run this year my son says somethings not right. I haven't ridden it yet but here's what I've gathered from him so far.
Starts and idles around great. Pin throttle and engine revs go up like normal but ski seems to bog and top speed is only about half of usual. He says occasionally it will lurch forward like full power but slow right back down.
I first thought plugs cutting out but he seems to think engine revs are high and stay high. So now I wonder could it be something a long the lines of water drive system since he thinks engine runs full power? How could I test water drive thrust or would you check something different? Thanks

Ride it yourself and post back.

Plugs are cheap. hint hint.

I know next to nothing about jet ski's drives/jets but, like you said, check real close for something broken or loose maybe blocking the water intake??

My first guess is an ignition miss (like old plugs)
