petcock or fuel valve settings

fzr 600. Been awhile since had a bike. So, straight up and down opens fuel, horizontal shuts off? Isn't there a reserve tank setting? What happens if I forget to shut off after riding?

Also, any suggestion on a good way to do a simple hidden kill switch to keep from getting stolen? That ignition switch would take only a minute to hot wire.

Yes, then straight UP reserve usually.

You can put a switch almost anywhere, I would pick a wire to something on the ignition so it will crank but won't start. This way the thief would thing he just didn't hot wire it right.
Also, does it have a steering lock? Use that too.

No steering lock. It's a 91 and think the bike has been rebuilt several times. Lost keys, put new ignition switch, but wired just hang in the bottom of switch. Probably try to find the wire from the kill switch and hide a connector switch somewhere else on bike. It's a junk bike, but really has personality

Switch horizontil, gas off, point down regular tank, up reserve? how far can I go on reserve? No gas gauge.

Yes. Up reserve. How far? good question. Depends on the bike but I would go ASAP to the gas station because usually there in not much left in there for reserve.
