Starter noise in 81 xs 650

Finely got most of it put together and tried to start it. Starter really made some grinding rough noise then kicked out ..but then sounded normal .so I took it out and that was 4 hrs of fun..bought another used on..I knew it would also make the same noise...but took a shot...comes from behind timing all...when it stops the bolt stops rotation ...do I need to rebuilt the other starter or just kick start it and surrender..

Did you check the gear the starter drives? They usually have some type of sprag (on way clutch gizmo) that like to go bad. Do you have a service manual? Anyway, just a thought. Those sprags make tons of horrible noises when they go bad.

Well most likely the one that the starter goes into or the one that the starter gear goes into. Do you have a service manual? They are worth there weight in gold.
