SR250 oil filter orientation

New here. Rebuilt head on 1980 SR250 due to damage from oil starvation. Still not getting oil to valve train. It occurred to me that I don't know the orientation of the oil filter KN 145. Does the side with the hole in it go towards the cover or towards the engine?

depends on where the oil ports are, if they are in the cover then the hole will be towards the cover, ect.

Is it like this? He has the ports in the cover and the filter hole goes to the cover....
